Morning Scott,

It was good to see you again.  Long-range planning is a particularly interesting topic to me - we'll see where it leads for Cuttyhunk.

I look forward to hearing and learning more about your work with World University and School.  I did some brief browsing on the school's website and am intrigued by the possibilities that exist with the project and even how (at some point), younger students like my two, could participate.  For example, Gw is very interested in engineering and Ca, technology.  For Technology, I was able to utilize Code.org for free (once completed, there is little else organized in such a manner), but appropriate materials for engineering at the level I needed, was challenging to find.

If I can be of any help in this project, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Safe travels on your return trip home.

All my best,
M

Thanks so much for your email, Michelle, and what a nice surprise to receive it.

It will be great to stay in touch as WUaS develops in a variety of ways (and perhaps you would all enjoy wiki-developing it). On WUaS's degree side, we seek to offer free CC online accrediting I.B., undergraduate (BS/BA), Ph.D., law and M.D. degrees, first in English. On our wiki side in English, perhaps Gwen, Carter and you can help find the greatest online resources for open learning and teaching. Here in beginning form is the beginning "Educational Software" wiki subject - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Educational_Software - (before WUaS moves from the Wikia wiki to a wiki in Wikidata) and this is particularly an area where you might find most enjoyable and best learning software. (WUaS seeks to add open, free, best and most enjoyable computing and learning resources).

If Carter and Gwen had access to an interactive great online high school from Cuttyhunk offering I.B. or similar high school diplomas (accredited in Massachusetts), do you think they would be interested? Or perhaps they might even be interested in the Stanford Online High School, a kind of model with which WUaS seeks to come into conversation - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/02/masai-lion-how-might-disabled-wuas.html. In addition to these two videos on the SOHS, outgoing Stanford President John Hennessy's video talk here is really great as well. (I post much to my blog about WUaS under the "global university" label). Perhaps I can mention some of this to Le and Du as well if I see them today.

Hi to Ca and Gw. :)

All the best,
Scott

Hi D (and P and M),

Thanks for your great Cuttyhunk Long Range Planning endeavors, Dix.

I added a new "Education" category to the Cuttyhunk skills' spread sheet going around on paper at the Fishing Club yesterday evening (what a nice get together and community dinner!), plus some information about World University and School. Were you able to read my handwriting?

And shall we talk with Michelle, the school teacher, about possibly further organizing the wiki WUaS Skills subjects - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects#Skills - from a Cuttyhunk perspective (as WUaS moves from the Wikia Wiki to a wiki in Wikidata imminently). I bet lots of Cuttyhunkers would be able to wiki-add great open free resources from the web specialized in areas they are interested in. There's also a "Sailing" wiki subject at CC WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Sailing - with a few CC MIT OCW courses, for example. And the open teaching and learning potential at WUaS is enormous. Cuttyhunkers could begin to teach to their web cameras in a variety of ways, especially with good long range planning for this :)

Cheers,
Scott

The Stanford Online High School and outgoing President John Hennessy videos, again, are here:

Masai lion: How might a disabled WUaS student & in their room/home in a VIDEO classroom in Google Street View in Addison Museum add to learning exp?, Assistive_Technologies (planned in all 7,943 languages) and Museums (all in all languages) and Virtual Worlds at WUaS, Appreciating this Stanford University Online High School approach to group video classroom, and especially re WUaS's pedagogical plans for engaging the Conference Method re Reed College but online in developing new ways, Appreciating too outgoing Stanford University President Hennessy's talk and emphasis on entrepreneurship, leadership as well as the physical beauty of Stanford's campus, John Hennessy, Stanford University

Morning Scott,

This summer, as I map out the curriculum for the year, I will research online resources that may be perfect to include.  I will plan to engage the kids in the fall as a part of their technology class.  I have already started thinking about some courses that maybe they themselves could teach, i.e.:  Sailing???  Is there a criteria for determining the quality of the web resources?

Regarding high school, the conversations I have had have been for the students to attend high school on the mainland - to experience a somewhat typical high school with a larger number of students.  It is certainly possible they might consider the online option, but because the students have had such isolated school experiences, I’m not sure that is a consideration at this time.

Hi Michelle (and Lexi!),

Thanks for your helpful email again, Michelle. And greetings from the SF Bay Area.

In terms of your Cuttyhunk schoolhouse class's long range planning, as well as WUaS's, the SUBJECT TEMPLATE - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - is central to almost all of WUaS's open wiki subject pages (again WUaS is moving soon from the clunky Wikia wiki to wiki emerging from Wikidata, which will engage information machine processes further). Have you or Gwen or Carter edited a Wikipedia or Wikidata page? This might be a fun project - editing (and therefore teaching in a sense) to a knowledge generation project at any age is an empowering process.

Anyone can create a wiki subject at WUaS, and you'll find familiar academic subjects in physics and chemistry, for example, already, as well as creative wiki subjects here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects (search on "Kids" or "Children" here) - and this main WUaS Subjects' page is planned for all 7,943+ languages (newly in Wikidata, with machine translation, machine learning and AI all in the background). And WUaS pages will fork as they specialize and grow. Anyone can add further CC MIT OCW (here are MIT OCW's courses in seven languages - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/) or CC Yale OYC OpenYaleCourses to a page they begin, or especially, for example, teach to their web cameras or add great content they know of or create.

WUaS's and Wikipedia's openness encourage people to contribute, and Wikipedia (now in 358 languages!!!) is continuing to focus on quality questions as a great Wiki. And in moving to Wikidata with its human and machine focus, they're trying to have every statement have a reference/citation in these regards. (And Wikipedia doesn't seem to link Youtube currently). Presently WUaS's years' old clunky Wikia wiki hasn't been very easy to edit, but it would be great if you, Gwen and Carter would like to help focus how to design the upcoming SUBJECT TEMPLATE for WUaS in Wikidata to be easy and fun and open and excellent. Hopefully WUaS's MIT OCW and Yale OYC focus will inform a standard of excellence for contributions to all WUaS pages, and we'll potentially seek stewards to moderate some pages if such quality "criteria" - ie these examples - begin to falter. WUaS sees the value of "free speech" in the learning conversation - and in creating 358 languages in an online open wiki encyclopedia! - and hopes too to create a culture of learning excellence in our Wiki.

I'm excited about developing the new SUBJECT TEMPLATE in Wikidata potentially with Carter and Gwen at the helms - from their perspectives and yours especially, Michelle. WUaS will eventually seek middle schoolers online to apply for the free CC MIT OCW-centric high school (probably I.B.) degrees (from their own homes), but with fun and excellence and interactivity in mind. So if they and you could focus in conversation with me such developments, it will also make accessibility for kids and parents from other countries, first in English, find creativity in adding to WUaS. (You all probably come across great examples of what works already from the Cuttyhunk school house, given the examples you shared). Easy excellence of adding will generate a very interesting learning and teaching community (and possibly of kids too), and Wikipedia now has a history of approaches to some of this (not necessarily too much of a kids' wiki focus).

I was surprised when I just looked that I (or anyone else) haven't added Code.org to WUaS yet - e.g. here http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Educational_Software - but that might be a first good project for you to explore at WUaS, once WUaS is up and running in Wikidata, probably in something like SQID (which is related to Wikidata - http://tools.wmflabs.org/sqid/#/view?id=Q42). Carter and Gwen could begin and focus, with your help, for example an "Engineering for Kids" wiki subject page - based on http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Engineering - or "Information Technology for Kids" - based on http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Information_Technology. These WUaS wiki Subject pages are each kinds of schools, so Gwen and Carter could each in a sense begin their own schools with these, and make them artistically colorful, and possibly even use Scratch building block programming language interactivity in this, where each "section" on the main SUBJECT TEMPLATE could become a "building block" (especially if I get the MIT Media Lab junior faculty position) ... which would be fun for other kids who might all create a community together (and in group video).

I enjoyed seeing some of the photos here recently - http://cuttyhunkislandschoolhouse.blogspot.com - and if you began to long range plan and develop some of the above ideas in this email, it might be fun to start this blog up again too. I'd love to learn and read about some of your discoveries and inventions at WUaS, as you explore creating wiki subjects and much more in World University and School, for example. :)

Kids teaching "Sailing" - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Sailing - in a film-realistic interactive virtual earth with a brain wave head set could also be fun to explore :)

Cheers,
Scott

[Wikidata] SQID evolved again: references

Markus and Wikidatans,

Could someone please lay out the road map to get from Douglas Adams in SQID - http://tools.wmflabs.org/sqid/#/view?id=Q42  to Douglas Adams in Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Adams - with its multitude of references? Are these two Wikimedia resources already linked? (I see the Douglas Adams Wikidata Q item - https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42 - under "Tools" on the Wikipedia D.A. page, but I don't see SQID). How will the adding of all the references already on this Wikipedia page into SQID/Wikidata work? When will this likely happen?

Ease of human editing such a Douglas Adams Wikipedia page by people in many languages should lead to a myriad of further references. (Pardon if this is a naive question) but is it already possible to add to/edit a Wikipedia page and have these human additions go directly into its Wikidata Q item and eventually re SQID too? Thank you.

Cheers, Scott

Markus Kroetzsch replied in this thread to the whole Wikidata list (sent right at 3pm PT as the Wikimedia Office hour in IRC, which I was in, ended):

Hi Scott,

SQID display of Wikipedia links is tracked in
https://github.com/Wikidata/SQID/issues/63
Will be implemented later.

Editing Wikipedia or Wikidata is not currently part of what SQID does.

Markus

I think and hope "Will be implemented later" refers too to WUaS developing in Wikidata.
