We Need to Talk About the Power of AI to Manipulate Humans

Our tendency to become emotionally attached to chatbots could be exploited by companies seeking a profit.

"This requires a new level of corporate responsibility. We need to deliberately and consciously build AI that will improve the human condition—not just pursue the immediate financial gain of gazillions of addicted users.

Working on open artificial-intelligence technology and brain-computer interfaces, or forming ethics committees, are just part of the solution. We need to consciously build systems that work for the benefit of humans and society. They cannot have addiction, clicks, and consumption as their primary goal. AI is growing up, and will be shaping the nature of humanity. AI needs a mother."

Thekla lark: Beginning to develop CC World Univ & Sch in MediaWiki / Wikibase-Wikidata

Hi Tim, Daniel, Dario, Allen, Luis, Tighe, (Markus and Lydia),

Thanks for your recent excellent WMF talks, Allen and Markus - "Problematizing and Addressing the Article-as-Concept Assumption in Wikipedia," and "Understanding Wikidata Queries"

(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2jpKRwPT-Q and https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Research/Showcase#June_2017) - which I found very informative and helpful, and timely for what follows especially.

As you may know, I'm developing CC MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, which is like CC Wikipedia (in 358 languages) with CC MIT OCW (in 7 languages) and CC Yale OYC, and CC WUaS donated WUaS to Wikidata in October 2015. WUaS seeks to develop major universities in all countries' official / main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching and learning in Wikipedia's 358 languages and eventually in all 7,099 living languages - beginning with this SUBJECT TEMPLATE : http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE

Thanks to Wikimedians Lydia, Ryan Kaldari and Jan Zerebecki, World University and School began developing in Mediawiki (but not in Wikibase/Wikidata), in English and German, from January (during the WikiDev conference in SF) to March 2016 but this the stopped working then. Here's a version of this in the web-archive - https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20150324001526/http://worlduniversityandschool.org/mediawiki-1.24.1/index.php?title=Main_Page - which I'd like to begin with again, but now in Wikibase/Wikidata too. Now that both Mediawiki and Wikibase/Wikidata have had one and a half years to develop further, I'd like to begin to re-install and develop WUaS in English and German (which I know at an intermediate level), as well as in Chinese and Spanish, which are WUaS pilot languages, and which were your test languages in your recent talks, Allen and Markus, I heard. Importantly, they are also 2 of CC4 MIT OCW's 7 languages - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ .  MIT OCW's CC4 licensing allows for "sharing" and "adapting" but is "non-commercial," (while Wikisource's CC0 licensing, by contrast for example, is "commercial").

At a Wikimedia friend's recent suggestion, I'm going to begin to seek to install Mediawiki and Wikibase for wiki CC World University and School using -

But I'm a social scientist (having just written a large actual-virtual ethnographic book) and not too much of a coder, and found Jan and Kaldari's help invaluable in the installation of Mediawiki in January 2016. There are also a lot of potential planning considerations in developing World Univ & Sch in Mediawiki/Wikibase - including anticipating multiple languages and using Wikibase/Wikidata ... and potentially, as I talked about with Lydia this January 2017 at Wikidev, developing a WUaS bookstore using CC0 (commercial) Wikisource in a newly emergent wing at WUaS. (I've been talking with Silke, a German friend who works a quarter time in the Stanford bookstore, who's interested in organizing the online CC WUaS bookstore, first in English, but WUaS doesn't have a "front end" for this yet).

So Daniel (as Wikidata Principal Platform Engineer) and Tim (as Lead Platform Architect on the MediaWiki Platform team), as I proceed with attempting to install Mediawiki and Wikibase, could I please ask you some questions? And as language questions arise, beyond in English and German, could I ask you Allen and Luis about developing WUaS in Chinese and Spanish, please? And, Dario, as WUaS begins to develop our CC0 WUaS Bookstore emerging potentially out of Wikisource/Wikidata, could I please ask you about how this would work (potentially on your Talk pages - mine is Scott_WUaS - or here ... )? Thank you!

CC OCW WUaS is seeking to matriculate students this autumn for free since CC MIT OCW-centric online accrediting Bachelor's degrees, first in English, but soon in Chinese and Spanish, with the course catalog here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/.

Thank you so much.

Best,
Scott

Dear Dr. Arora,

Very nice to meet and talk with you this morning after your Stanford Grand Rounds' excellent talk "Medicine Grand Rounds: Democratizing Knowledge to Reduce Disparities in Healthcare – Project ECHO" - http://medicinecalendars.stanford.edu/event/medicine-grand-rounds-democratizing-knowledge-to-reduce-disparities-in-healthcare-project-echo/.

Thank you too for sharing your card with me.

Looking forward very much to talking further with you. Thank you.

All the best,

Hi, M,

Will probably head to Stanford to develop WUaS Corp further as well as focus on writing my next book - of poetry.

Wanting to make advances in the WUaS Corporation with Board and Officers (will probably work with Bylaws from Nolo Press related), and create an entity that is both excellent in all ~204 countries and all 7,099 living languages and returns 11.5% in perpetuity, if possible ... and where the communication between both wings is well-focused, generative and excellent legally as well.

Just heard back from Gerd that he's not available to be on the WUaS Corporation Board. He's excellent and very knowledgeable in STEM and synthetic biology, and is an Apple Programmer, but I most appreciate the quality of communication I see in his email, and have experienced in knowing him. He's in some of the Google group video Hangouts from 2012 here below on my web page -

"Hi Scott,

Great to hear from you. Unfortunately, I am quite busy and not able to take more responsibilities for the present. Good luck with your next steps.

All the best

Gerd

*
Hi Gerd,

Nice to meet with you in Google Hangouts in the Stanford Startup Board course 5 years ago ... http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm.

As the new WUaS Corporation emerges, and as we file the legal paperwork for this, I'm writing to inquire whether you would be available please to become a WUaS Corp Board member of this for-profit company (with the Synthetic Biology / related STEM portfolio), forking from World University and School -
http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html
- for just a couple of hours per week/month? In the process of incorporating newly as a for-profit, the startup WUaS Corporation will be able to offer only shares to Board members.

The WUaS Corporation seeks to be in each of all ~200 countries and their official languages, and in all 8,444 languages, as academic markets.

How best could we possibly please talk further about this?

Thank you!

Best regards,
Scott"

... There's a quality of ethic and integrity and reason I appreciate in all of our communications - that are both caring and also realistic in modernity/internetity (a term I think I've coined).

But I'm also very very appreciative of my friendly communication with Larry over the years of developing World University and School, and re this new WUaS Corporation too.

L,
Scott

Hi M,

How is your day going? It's cooler here in San Mateo area just north of Stanford this afternoon compared with Canyon.

Stanford Medicine's Grand Rounds meets tomorrow morning at 8 which means a waking up at 5 am morning ... Just left Stanford after a great talk by Wesleyan Professor "Paula Matthusen: Sounds in Remembered Spaces and before" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/702/70213/ - whom I've emailed and hope to stay in communication with academically.

She records sound from underground tunnels and in all sorts of places, and composes musical pieces from this - quite remarkably.

How would sound from a recording from a realistic virtual earth of a tunnel below the Library of Alexandria sound today compared with when the tunnel was built - is a mind expanding question?

Or sound from the tunnels of ancient Rome - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Greek_and_Roman_architectural_records - some of which you touched on?

Heard back from a first likely affirmative WUaS Corp Board member, who is a Doctor of Pharmacology, and has a Stanford MBA, and who is originally from India .... D.J. ... all big pluses ... and perhaps with the Pharmacology / India / Stanford Business School-related portfolios :) Have emailed her asking if I can add her to name to the Board list in the next paperwork filing steps. Perhaps she's even looking for a job ... and perhaps can be remunerated in shares.

Re Internetity - I wrote about this in my paper in Nelson Graburn's course in 2001 ... (and think I coined it ... see, for example - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2009/03/cobra-lily-plants-internetity-video.html ...

Will email a few further invitations to the WUaS Corp soon ...

L,
Scott

Good morning, M,

Here I was at Grand Rounds ... and I had read just before this that there's a bike sale for $33.50 each beginning at 7 am by the Stanford Police, which I've checked out - get a ticket early come back at 11:45 to line up in numerical order.

The talk's by Dr. Arora MD from New Mexico, originally from India, about Democratizing Healthcare knowledge ...

"Medicine Grand Rounds: Democratizing Knowledge to Reduce Disparities in Healthcare – Project ECHO" ... right up WUaS's online avenue . . Not making video rounds examining unique symptoms and diagnosing them on the fly ... was SO great ... I'll email him since he gave me my card ... and  Stanford's Dr Charles Prober, who focuses on these questions, and who gave me his card too!!!!!!

Would be great if the WUaS online bookstore planned first in 358 languages with Wikisource's Creative Common's commercial licensing for the database could emerge out if both Quaker EarthLight bookstore and Stanford's ... and develop with IT into all of Wikipedia's 358 languages then into all 7,099 living languages.

How are you?

L,
Scott

Stanford Medical Bookstore that is :) ... and in all countries' official lAnguages at WUaS's online medical schools and teaching hospitals :)

Dear Paula,

Thanks for your great Stanford talk just now - "Paula Matthusen: Sounds in Remembered Spaces and before" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/702/70213/ - and great to talk afterward.

More about the planned wiki Music School at World University and School here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/876902749035573248 (planned for all instruments +, each a wiki subject page for open teaching and learning, in all 7,099 living languages) - and beginning Music Composition, and Computer Music wiki subject pages as well (before WUaS moves to a new wiki emerging from Wikidata / Mediawiki (Wikipedia's database and front end in 358 languages). Wiki CC WUaS is like CC Wikipedia with CC MIT OCW (in 7 languages).

More about a realistic virtual earth here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/virtual%20world - but here's the Harbin Hot Springs gate house in Streetview - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook - from which conceptually WUaS would like to create a STEM field site and classroom - with time slider - and in all 7,099 living languages.

(Beginning wiki Library Resources wiki pages, planned also in all 7,099 living languages is here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Library_Resources ... )

In what ways will be able to create new musical pieces re your talk, pieces and "Sounds in Remembered Spaces and before" I wonder?

Thank you, and nice to meet you - and let's stay in touch!

Best regards,
Scott

*
Hi Gregory,

Thanks for your email, and sounds great. As prospective WUaS Corporation Board member (with the finance portfolio), one question I've been thinking about in the big picture is how to generate 11.5% annual returns in perpetuity with all 10 planned for-profit revenue streams (currently) in each of all ~200 countries and indeed in each of all 7,099 living languages in Ethnologue (8,444 entries in languages in Glottolog), each an academic market. And how best too to anticipate going public in each of all ~200 countries' official languages (i.e. be listed and traded on their stock markets) ... while developing with bit coin and the blockchain and planning for helping develop an universal basic income with related taxation country by country. Conceptually this could all develop with Quickbooks/Turbotax/Intuit Multi-store in all of their languages, as well as Wikidata (Wikipedia's database in 358 languages) and related databases - and with WUaS law school and computer science students writing this code, in each country's language. You could add potentially enormous value in helping to develop the financial language for this step by step. The potential WUaS shares for this, especially once we get financially operational, would be significant.

Thanks and looking forward to talking further about this!

Regards,
Scott

Big Bend National Park: Great! - Google Sites is redesigned ... and it's within the Google Ecosystem ... and it's free for some Google Apps for Education folk (like WUaS potentially) :), Example: "Puertecitos Sulpher Hot Springs" web site in Google Sites, "Thinking of creating a website? Google Sites works with the two most recent desktop versions of the following browsers: Chrome Firefox ... and the business/rest of world is still much on Windows/Internet Explorer (possibly ~75%?), I would guess ... Since WUaS plans to be in all countries' official and main languages and work in ALL browsers the limitation that Google Sites does NOT serve web pages that end with these .htm and .html suffixes anymore would lead to WUaS NOT using Google Sites

"The new Google Sites is not yet available to the general public, but you may be able to access it if you have a Google Apps for Education account from your school ..."

Looks like Google Sites got re-vamped last November, that it’s free, and that it may even be workable for setting up a business (which is great, since it’s developing within the Google Ecosystem … re Google Neural Machine Translation, TensorFlow, Android) … and it’s simple …
BUT ...

Google Sites works with the two most recent desktop versions of the following browsers:
  • Chrome
  • Firefox

... and the business/rest of world is still much on Windows/Internet Explorer (possibly ~75%?), I would guess ...

*!!!
And another limitation re World University and School, which plans to be in all countries' official and main languages ... and work in ALL browsers, where I think that almost all browsers have been designed to serve web pages ending in  .htm and .html ... the limitation that Google Sites does NOT serve web pages that end with these .htm and .html suffixes anymore would lead to WUaS NOT using Google Sites ... see ...

    Limitations[edit]

    • No longer serves .html/.htm Web pages, like Google Pages did. All static HTML Web pages previously hosted on Google Pages can be migrated to Google Sites, but users later attempting to access them, as well as Portable Document Format (PDF) or other migrated files, must download those files in order to view them.

    *
WUaS will probably not go with Google Sites until it serves web pages with .htm and .html suffixes, for example, since ALL browsers read these, and WUaS seeks to be particularly accessible in all ~200 countries and in all 7,099 languages and especially online in Africa, for example.

But, on the other hand, it may be worth experimenting with after all ... (and .htm and .html web suffixes may eventually develop in Google Sites, and/or CC MIT OCW-centric WUaS students in the developing world, for example, may be able to easily get Chrome ... ) ... but probably, in terms of priorities and given its limitations, after the WUaS Corp next steps occur in the upcoming months.

    *
Still in the thinking phase here, S ... re free universal CC MIT OCW-centric education in all countries' languages - and a bookstore - and which information technologies ... and whom to code this further ..... very nice to talk with you ...
